Most folks seem unwilling to entertain a Web 3.0, so let’s toast the end of the the most unimaginative era of web design sooner rather than later. That may not be fair to say- so hitting the tennis ball back to myself, I’d offer that with so much innovation going on, Web 2.0 design was born out of three stimuli:

  1. As noted elsewhere, your tools tend to influence the final outcome
  2. Standards compliant CSS and XHTML development give designers tools that are so powerful, it’s tough to resist using them all the time. In some respects, Web 2.0 visual design will be the Photoshop filter of the 2010’s.

  3. A last ditch effort to shake the Jakob Nielsenites and MVT flying monkeys off our backs.
  4. Years of harangue and abuse from the father of Usability and the Conversionistas have left the web design community with lots and lots of white space and simplicity of design. In many ways, Jakob Nielsen is the father of the Web 2.0 design style. Don’t believe me ? Click on to his site.

  5. Investors need easy-to-understand web sites.
  6. Maybe there’s so much new thinking about old ideas that we need a quiet place to process everything we’re being asked to take in.

Just sayin’.
